States With The Highest And Lowest EV Adoption
While American shoppers are buying more electric vehicles than before when you look at the entire country, things are a lot different when you look at individual states. According to a new report from J.D. Power, America’s EV adoption rate varies significantly by state.
J.D. Power’s report indicates that EV adoption continues to rise in the U.S. and now represents 8.6% of the total new vehicle retail market in the country in the first half of 2023. While the overall rate of EV adoption has gone up in the first half of the year, J.D. Power claims that the country is split when it comes to the adoption of electric vehicles.
The states with the highest overall EV adoption rates have, as J.D. Power found, offered incentives and have the necessary infrastructure to support EVs. States that have lagged behind in EV adoption don’t have these elements.
The study claims that the top 10 states with the highest overall EV adoption rates are California, Washington, Hawaii, Oregon, Nevada, Maryland, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Massachusetts.
On the flip side, states with the lowest EV adoption are Michigan, Iowa, Kansas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Wyoming, Louisiana, South Dakota, West Virginia, and North Dakota. J.D. Power says that the 10 states with the lowest EV adoption have actually seen EV adoption rates decline in the first half of 2023.
Based on results from the 2020 presidential election, the majority of states that have the highest overall EV adoption rates voted Democratic except for Utah. The 10 states with the lowest EV adoption rate, with the exception of Michigan, voted Republican. J.D. Power’s data could showcase a correlation between political affiliation and EV adoption.
J.D. Power introduced a new EV Retail Share Forecast that “captures granular EV sales, consideration, pricing, infrastructure growth and other census demographic factors” in the hopes of projecting EV adoption rates through 2035 for individual states.
The EV Retail Share Forecast anticipates a nationwide estimate of 70% EV market share by 2035. The rate, though, varies by state, as California is projected to have a 94% EV market share by 2035 and North Dakota is projected to have a 19% EV market share by that date.
