overview:
The 2023 Honda CR-V kicks off the brand-new sixth generation of the compact SUV, featuring many redesigns and changes from its predecessor. The CR-V comes in his four different trim levels: EX, Sport Hybrid, EX-L and Sport Touring Hybrid.
This new version of the CR-V is intended to compete with other modern SUVs in its class. Toyota RAV4, kia sportageand Hyundai Tucson. With a wide range of tech options and the Honda Sensing suite for driving assistance, the CR-V is a great option for those who want a little more fun in a family SUV.
The new CR-V is available with two different powertrain options. If you’re looking for an all-gasoline engine, the EX and EX-L trim levels feature a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine that develops 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque via a continuously variable transmission.
For those seeking better fuel economy, the Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid models feature a 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain assisted by two electric motors producing 204 horsepower. The EX, EX-L and Sport trims are available with AWD or FWD, while the Sport Touring trim comes standard with AWD.
One of the biggest changes to the new CR-V is its increased size. The exterior has lost some of the CR-V’s signature rounded lines, leaving more space inside the cabin. The longer wheelbase makes the new CR-V look bigger overall, and the double front grille creates a striking stance and profile.
The CR-V also has the technology features expected from the new 2023 SUV. The lower trim level houses a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
High trim increases screen size up to 9 inches, and the top-of-the-line Honda CR-V Hybrid Sport Touring features a 12-speaker Bose sound system. It also has a number of standard safety and driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and rear seat reminders.
Overall score: 4.5/5 stars
Driving Experience: 4/5 Stars
This new car has a relatively straightforward driving feel for a car of this size, displacement and price range.
CVT transmissions are noisier than traditional automatics, but offer a smoother overall driving feel that is better suited for highway speeds.
The engine from the previous generation has been retuned to run more efficiently, but the new CR-V puts the same amount of power to the wheels.
An all-new front end adds 92 pounds to the weight of the Honda CR-V, especially the front end, making the steering slightly duller and less reactive overall.
In our testing, we found the suspension to be stiffer, but not so much that it detracted from the ride.
Safety features: 5/5 stars
Honda has long been known as one of the leaders in standard safety features, and the all-new 2023 CR-V is no exception.
The CR-V is equipped with a large suite of driver assistance and safety technologies designed to keep you as safe as possible whenever you’re behind the wheel.
Standard features that come with all trim levels include blind spot monitoring, driver attention monitoring and traffic sign recognition.
All safety functions work together. In particular, the automatic emergency braking works when a sudden stop is required while driving.
Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Departure Warning are standard on all trim levels.
Value: 5/5 Stars
If you’re looking for a versatile and dependable family car with a relatively low MSRP, the 2023 CR-V could be a good option.
With a range of standard safety features typically reserved for higher trim levels, even the most basic level gives you all the protection and driving assistance you need.
The standard turbo four-cylinder engine provides plenty of power for most uses, and adding an electric motor gives you even more horsepower.
The fuel efficiency of the hybrid version of the new CR-V is great for commuters and travelers as it saves a lot of money on gas.
Technical features: 3.5/5 stars
The all-new CR-V has all the technical features you would expect from a new compact SUV in this price range.
The interior features a partially digital gauge cluster with an analog speedometer and a customizable screen behind the steering wheel.
A touchscreen infotainment system features both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity in the front seats, and two USB-C ports in the higher trim level rear seats. I didn’t always like the infotainment system’s user interface, as simple functions required more steps than necessary.
This CR-V is packed with useful features such as Second Row Warning and Hill Descent Control to help regulate speed when going downhill.
Utility: 5/5 stars
If you’re looking for a practical compact SUV, the new CR-V is one of your best options. Mazda CX-5 again Subaru Forester.
With a plethora of technology and safety features designed to keep you on the road, this is one of the CR-V’s premier models for those looking for a dependable and worry-free everyday driver.
Climate control switches and infotainment dials are all facing the driver’s seat, making it convenient for a single person inside the vehicle.
Choosing the AWD version of the CR-V will allow it to be used in all kinds of conditions, including light off-road use.
Styling and design: 4/5 stars
The CR-V’s exterior redesign aims to take it to the next level when it comes to exterior styling and contours.
One of the biggest changes is the front end, which is now much heavier than its predecessor, giving the CR-V a distinctive look that the previous generation lacked.
The interior is tastefully appointed and has a lot of new stuff. honda civicso it looks more like a car and is easier to operate than ever before.
Gloss black alloy wheels give the exterior a sleek, modern look that other SUVs and crossovers often miss, even at higher trim levels and more premium price points.
Fuel economy: 4/5 stars
Both the non-hybrid and hybrid 2023 CR-V deliver fuel efficiency comparable to other SUVs on the market in the same category.
The non-hybrid 1.5-liter 4-cylinder delivers EPA-estimated 28 mpg in city and 34 mpg on the highway in a front-wheel-drive configuration.
With a hybrid powertrain option in Sport and Sport Touring, you can expect 43 mpg/liter in city driving and 36 mpg on the highway. In our 452-mile test in Sport Touring, we averaged 30MPG in mixed driving.
AWD reduces fuel consumption, but not enough to discourage drivers if they feel AWD is a good option for their driving style and the types of roads they typically drive.
