Ford expands recall of Escape and Bronco Sport

Ford has extended a recall for a new edition of its most popular compact crossover with a 1.5-liter engine. Cracked fuel injectors on Ford Escape and related Ford Bronco Sport can leak fuel or vapor inside the engine near the ignition source. This could start a fire under the hood, he said on Monday, NHTSA said.

This recall includes 521,778 cases and extends the previous recall (22V-191) issued on March 25, 2022. The new numbers include 345,451 escapes and the original recall of Bronco sports cars for cracked engine oil separator housings with the same risks. It showed the same symptoms as the extended recall.

New wider recall covers 2020-2023 ford escape And from 2021 onwards2023 Ford Bronco Sport Equipped with a base 1.5-liter turbo 3 engine. The recall includes previously recalled vehicles and applies to all his 1.5-liter Escape and Bronco Sport models produced through October 17, 2022.

There were 10 engine fires after the oil separator problem was first fixed, with the number rising to 36 as of August this year. Ford conducted further investigations and now acknowledges his 54 reports of underhood fires from affected fleets of vehicles. Two recalls and 43 legal claims resulted in four injuries.

The root cause of the engine fire is still under investigation. At the time of the latest recall, Ford said, “The engine’s fuel injectors have cracked, allowing fuel to leak into the cylinder head at high speeds, exit through drain holes, and fall onto hot surfaces in the exhaust/turbo system. I discovered that there is a place where it can burn.”

Owners can smell gas inside and outside the vehicle, and if it catches fire, can be followed by visible smoke or flames.

Until Ford finds the root cause, a software update to the engine control module will detect low pressure in the fuel system, alert customers to seek service, and disable the high-pressure fuel pump that limits engine power. Additionally, Ford and Lincoln service centers install a drain tube from the cylinder head drain hole to the ground away from the engine surface.

Owners will be notified by email as early as December 19, 2022 and the service will be completed free of charge. For the owner seeking reimbursement for work completed on the engine fire issue, the deadline he has is December 30, 2022.
