MIES/ZIMMERMANN CLAIM Audi wins the 50th ADAC GT Masters race at the Lausitzring

Excitement, drama, emotion – this season’s ADAC GT Masters Race 10 at the DEKRA Lausitzring had everything that makes motorsport so captivating. After 43 laps of racing, Tim Zimmermann (25/Langenargen) in the #1 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II won a great race. In doing so, he gave Audi his 50th victory in the ADAC GT Masters. His visibly impressed partner Christopher Mies (33/Düsseldorf) said: Our car has been great over the last few weeks, but we haven’t been able to turn that into a win. We have finally been rewarded,” said the reigning German GT champion. In contrast, the mood at Schubert Motorsport was cool. Pole-sitter Nicky Catsburg (34/NL), while leading the #20 BMW M4 GT3, was penalized for being too late for the mandatory pit stop. It dashed any hope of victory. “The pit radio suddenly stopped working. Everything was working fine until then, but suddenly I couldn’t do anything,” said a perplexed team principal Torsten Schubert. The spectators were treated to great entertainment on Sunday and throughout the race weekend at his DEKRA Family & Friends Festival. The weekend attendance of 21,500 was a new record for his ADAC GT Masters event at the Lausitzring.

The race at the Lausitzring on Sunday developed into a battle for the lead from the beginning. Pole sitter Nicky Catsburg was under repeated pressure from Sven Muller (30/Bingen) in his #22 Porsche 911 GT3 R for Allied Racing. Christopher Mies and Jack Aitken (26/GB) in Emile Frey Racing’s #63 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo were also in a fierce battle for third and his fourth. The race calmed down while the drama for Schubert Motorsport was just beginning. Starting driver Nicky Catsburg was still on the track when all drivers were required to make pit stops between 25 and 35 minutes into the race. He was penalized his 49 seconds for this misdemeanor. In the #1 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II he was every opportunity Tim Zimmermann needed. The 25-year-old took the lead to take his first win at the ADAC GT Masters. The duo of Jack Aitken (26/GB) and Albert Costa Balboa (32/E) in the #63 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo put in a solid second place performance to move up to his third place in the overall standings. Shortly before the finish, everything got a little messed up. Fabian Schiller of Drago Racing Team ZVO in the #4 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo, Patrick Niederhauser (30/CH) in the #15 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II and his Joel Sturm (30/CH) in the #22 Porsche 20/Brühl). As a result, the 911 GT3 R dropped several places. Championship leader Raffaele Marcello took advantage of the opportunity to move up to 10th overall and score his third podium in Mann-Filter Team Landgraf’s #48 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo. Behind him, the duo of closest rivals Christian Engelhardt (35/Starnberg) and Ayhan Kangüven (24/TR) team his Joos #91 in his Sportswagen technique. A Porsche 911 GT3 R finished him fourth.

Fabian Schiller (age 25 / Troisdorf) and Jules Gounon (age 27 / female) of #4 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo of Drago Racing Team ZVO finished fifth. However, he was later given a 10-second penalty for causing a collision just before the end of the race, and was demoted to 10th as a result. Local favorite Maximilian Paul (22/Dresden) and his partner Marc Compelli (35/I) have moved up to his 5th position in Paul Motorsport’s #71 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo. The youngster from Dresden also won his junior competition for Pirelli, just as he did on Saturday. The fastest lap of the race was Dennis Marshall (26 years old / Eggenstein) with a time of 1:23.217. He and partner Kim-Louis Schramm (25/Meuspath) finished his 6th in Rutronik Racing’s #27 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II. The #15 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II followed by the same Audi his driver Patrick Niederhauser (30/Switzerland) in his 7th place. Returning to the series, Marvin Dienst (25/Lampartheim) and Jan Marszalkowski (19/innings) finished 11th in Mercedes-AMG Team ZVO’s #8 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo #8. and finished in 8th place. The #10 BMW M4 GT3 scored seven points with Schubert Motorsport youngsters Niklas Krutten (19/Trier) and Ben Green (24/UK) finishing in his ninth position.

Tim Zimmerman: “I am really happy with this win. I had no idea we were leading, just three laps later I was told over the radio that I was first, although the tires on the rear axle started to wear out a bit in the last three laps. I was able to get the job done.”

Christopher Mies: “We have been working hard all year and today we finally made a breakthrough. With the pace we have, overtaking is incredibly difficult, so I wanted to take care of the tires a bit for Tim. This is a great win for our team.”
