best lowrider?

lowrider. This is more than just a catchy, soundtrack-ready song by Long Beach Funk Band War, which peaked at No. 7 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles chart in the summer of 1975.it’s also a hydraulic hot rod listed thereAnd two years after the song’s release, it became the name of Harley-Davidson’s first eye-popping factory custom bike.

Introduced at Daytona Bike Week in 1977, FXS Lowrider It boasted a 1206cc V-twin engine, a top speed of 105.6 mph and a seat height of 27 inches.Cornering might not have been the best with the extended front forks, but it looks definitely cool, and the Lowrider quickly became a bestseller. Various iterations would become staples of his line of Harley cruisers for the next three decades.

Since 2009, the brand has introduced a wide variety of lowriders, both on and off. But the Low Rider ST is different. Because this bike handles as well as it looks. I’ve had fun riding some previous lowriders in recent years. Baja, Mexico 2017 over- 2019 Loveland Pass in Colorado — I took a little trip, a little trip, a little trip and was thrilled to see what these wheels could do.

What makes the Harley Low Rider ST special?

Harley historians tell us that the ST style originated in Southern California. Here FXRs, Dynas and Softails are customized into dazzling machines that don’t sacrifice performance thanks to powerful engines, heightened suspension for better cornering and taller bars… Did, yeah, they’re mostly for looks.

That vibe carries over to the sleek Low Rider S. This is a naked bike with a profile not too different from the low riders of old. But it also exists in the ST, which is a more road-tripping option, mainly due to its aerodynamic frame-mounted fairing and nifty removable saddlebags.

A nod to modernity, ST offers a minimalist LCD “tech gauge” embedded in the handlebar riser and attractive options such as: $1,020 Rockford Fosgate Inner Fairing Audio Kit, I owe it to mention because my test drive had it — and I enjoyed it. The ST also has cruise control. As old school as I sometimes think I amI also enjoyed that feature.

Both bikes also boast the roaring beast of a Milwaukee Eight 117 engine, a 1923 cc V-Twin powered by 103 ponies and delivering 125 ft-lbs. Torque at 3500 rpm. Of course, it’s only when the rubber hits the road that you realize what that means.

How comfortable is this Harley?

We knew we needed at least one long ride to thoroughly test this bike. So, in addition to ripping around New York City, he packed his saddlebags for a weekend trip to his DC suburb, where his parents and sister’s family live, about 260 miles from Manhattan.

We also did this trip on a variety of other bikes, including a Honda CTX700, Triumph Bonneville T-100 and an Indian Chieftain Elite, so we had good context in which to evaluate it. Compared to the three, the ST had the smoothest ride ever.

The main reasons include many of the features already referenced. The engine is, first of all, spectacular. I especially remember the previous lowrider having an impressive rumble… so much that the bars wobbled and it was hard to get into neutral, two traits that get old quickly. Beasts are tamed here. Cruising at a steady pace, it purrs aggressively. Still, when you need a lot of gas, ignoring a traffic light, or making a bold pass on a two-lane road, with a flick of your wrist, you can accelerate fast at high speeds, get the job done, and do it. Enjoy

FXRT Sport Glide fairings also play a role here. It’s not particularly bulky, so it doesn’t interfere with maneuvering in tight traffic. Still, it helps split the wind quickly, but the 6-inch sloping windshield provides enough flex to take you 90° down the highway without being hit by air forces. The stripped fairing may feel a little funky at first because the headlights don’t rotate with the bars, but in my experience the stock LED headlamps also provide plenty of light at night.

The third component that impressed me was the saddlebags.I was happy to discover 2 removable internal pockets from mine Dakine high roller snowboard bag Fits perfectly in these easy-to-use compartments and together provide approximately 2 cubic feet of capacity. This meant I was able to pack for a 3 day trip without having to worry about tying anything to my bike or back. The bag sits well above the exhaust and, like the fairing, is slim enough so it doesn’t affect handling in close quarters combat.

I learned firsthand when I stopped by a friend’s house in Brooklyn on my way home from DC, which happened to be a big holiday.ride From there It was one of the heaviest traffic I’ve ever experienced, but the ST is very maneuverable and can get you everywhere as if you were on a bike, much faster than expected. I was able to go home. Note that these bags are also very easy to remove when you really want to streamline.

Having a bike with torque, top speed and handling that can take you on all kinds of roads is great, but it means most of these features don’t fit your overall feel. funHowever, they are blissful in ST. Long back-to-back road trips can feel like a slog as the miles pile up and your wrists and hips go numb.

What else stands out about this cruiser?

Fairings and saddlebags would probably spoil the looks a bit – I always thought a bare bike would look cooler – but not by much. Because when I stopped at a gas station in a small town in the state, three guys who were driving pick-up trucks stopped by, were impressed with the bike, and asked me all about it. No one knows how much their interest has to do with the motorcycle’s relative fuel efficiency compared to, say, the Ford F-250.

As mentioned earlier, the Rockford Fosgate sound system, which integrates fairly seamlessly into the fairing, is an option and fairly expensive. But if he’s going to pay $20,000 or more for the bike, I’d suggest getting another grand. It’s fully controllable from your smartphone, so it’s worth having on your handlebars (I swear peak design bar mountdifficult to install, but once installed, it absorbs shock and releases quickly).

Once you’ve done this and paired, you’ll be locked out to a pair of 5.25″ woofers and remote tweeters that can hear up to about 80 mph, allowing you to embark on a journey with your very own soundtrack. In my case recently it was hail satin Foo Fighters Because nothing beats rolling around town fueled by testosterone, gasoline, and… disco.

How much does the Harley Lowrider ST cost?

The base price for the Vivid Black version is $21,749, while Gunship Gray paint starts at $22,199.
