From my home in Southern California to the scenic Monterey Peninsula, it’s just a day away via some of the state’s most sublime motorcycle roads, including Highway 1 on the majestic Big Sur Coast. Good Friday night dining and nightlife in Monterey is just steps away from dozens of hotels ranging from budget to luxury, so staying overnight is easy and fun. Add in the possibility of entering one of the largest vintage and custom bike competitions held on the green grass of a nearby luxury golf course, and the Quail Motorcycle Gathering has been a huge success since its inaugural event in 2008. The 2022 Quail Motorcycle Gathering celebrated the 50th anniversary of Harley-Davidson’s iconic XR-750, which was actually 2020 in 2020, in a featured class.

Many enthusiasts flock to The Quail for just one day. So the parking lot along Valley Green Drive is quite the motorcycle show in itself. This year, 3,200 spectators enjoyed his 270 famous and sophisticated motorcycles lined up on the lawn of Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel Valley. The one-day event cost $55 and ran from 10am to 4pm, so attendees had to keep moving to see and do everything.

Quail has hosted 400 machines over the past few years, but as McCall put it this year, “too many bikes.”

“You can’t see everything in one day. We are a one-day event,” he said. “So we cut it down. This to me is the heart and soul of the motorcycle community. There are a lot of smaller companies and smaller vendors that make this possible. Look – people are in good spirits, we are ready – hiding under a rock for two years is enough.

Sure, 2022’s Gathering may have been a little smaller after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, but it still struggled to take it all in. In addition to traditional classes such as British, Italian, Japanese, Competition and Antiques, the event featured five featured classes. The 2-stroke ‘Braaaps’ consisted of his superstars of on-road and off-road lingding, like his 1986 Suzuki RG500 Gamma of Matt Torrens of California. Other classes featured mini bikes, BMW/5 series motorcycles and a spectator favorite and one of his most successful race bikes of all time, the Harley-Davidson XR-750.
