EarthRoamer LTi roams into Jay Leno’s garage

If you want to be as far away from the grid as possible, you can do that with EarthRoamer LTi. This episode of Jay Leno’s garage provides details on this high-performance vehicle.

LTi Ford F-550 Super Duty Pickup TruckHolds a 6.7-liter turbo-diesel V-8 and a 10-speed automatic transmission in stock. EarthRoamer procures trucks directly from Ford and strips them to frame rails, the company’s customer experience manager Zack Renier explains in a video.

From the front seats to the front, the trucks appear to be almost in stock. However, EarthRoamer installed a rear captain’s chair instead of the cab’s stock bench seat. Behind the cab is a carbon fiber camper shell supported by a rear axle with a single wheel instead of a dual stock configuration. This made EarthRoamer compatible with 43-inch tires mounted on 20-inch double beadlock wheels.

The four-corner air suspension not only improves ride quality, but also regulates crosswinds (an important consideration given the wide side of the camper) and allows the vehicle to level when parked in the campsite. The camper shell has a built-in storage locker, but the swing-out box adds even more storage space. This truck has a smoker in one of those boxes.

The camper itself has features that are not normally found in heavy-duty overloaded vehicles, such as cedar closets and wine cellars. The bathroom is a closet-like space that combines a shower and a toilet. A full kitchen is also included and includes a convection oven with a stove, microwave, broiler and air fryer.

A typical RV or trailer usually requires an onboard propane tank or generator to power all these appliances. This limits the duration of the camping trip and increases the vehicle’s carbon dioxide emissions. That’s why EarthRoamer uses lithium-ion batteries that are charged with roof-mounted solar panels.

The truck weighs about 17,500 pounds and the donor super-duty chassis accounts for about 9,000 pounds. And note that this is a carbon fiber structure. Earlier fiberglass versions weighed between £ 1,500 and £ 2,000, according to Renier. Fuel economy is estimated at 10-12 mpg, and a 95-gallon diesel tank provides an estimated 1,000 miles of cruising range.

Still, the EarthRoamer LTi offers impressive off-road performance for what is essentially a small house with wheels. Watch the full video to see it.
