Does the motorcycle industry need a makeover?
A motorcycle is more than just a means of transportation. Often they are a way of life. Biker culture reflects a social community with shared values and priorities.
While motorcycles are a large part of the mobility ecosystem in many emerging economies in Asia and Southern Europe, the focus in the UK is primarily on high-capacity leisure models. Ask a group of people to describe the typical British biker and they are more likely to come up with a similar image. A tough white man roaring loudly down the highway obviously doesn’t apply to many users, but it’s an image that has built a solid foundation over the decades.
But is that a picture of the motorcycle’s sure place in the mobility ecosystem of the future? Pressure to clean up all forms of transport is on the rise, and emissions regulations are tightening. In the UK, for example, the government is considering phasing out the sale of new fossil fuel-powered motorbikes and mopeds by 2035. Electric bikes may be selling poorly among the established fan base.
