Reinventing the wheel has never been easier. Sportsters are as symbolic as motorcycles. Introduced in 1957, the Sportster is old enough to qualify for Medicare and is the longest-running model family in Harley-Davidson’s 119-year history.

Motor company Sportster S In 2021, the name was the only one in common with previous sports stars. The model designation was RH instead of XL. It was liquid cooling, not air cooling. And it was lighter, more powerful and more modern than the 48, the only 1,200cc Evo Powered XL left in the Harley lineup. With upsweep pipes, mashups of color and finish, fat bob-inspired headlights and thick tires, the Sportster S was a fundamental departure from the past.

new Night starOn the other hand, there is a classic sports star styling element. It features an airbox cover shaped like a peanut tank, a round air cleaner cover on the right side of the engine, and a double-exposed rear shock. Solo sheet and chopped fender like Iron 883, Iron 1200, And the side cover of the fuel tank under the seat, which is reminiscent of a sports star oil tank. It’s also named after the blacked-out Evopowered Sportster Nightstar XL1200N, which was part of Harley’s Dark Custom lineup, manufactured between 2007 and 2012.

Packed with 90 horses in a rugged chassis and weighing only 481 pounds, Harley’s latest RevMax-based sports star is a full-fledged corner carver. Used all 32 degree tilt angles available many times. The small speed screen looks cool and helps smooth air flow. Midmount controls can create a cramped cockpit for tall riders.

Rotation to maximum

Nightstar’s name and styling act as a bridge to the past. But with Sportster S Pan America Adventure BikeIt is built on modular Revolution Max A platform that represents the future of Harley-Davidson. The liquid-cooled 60 degree RevMax V Twin features DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, and a forged aluminum piston with a machined crown to achieve a 12: 1 compression ratio. .. RevMax acts as a central structural element of the chassis, with the trellis front frame, mid frame and tail section bolted directly to the engine.

Harley-Davidson has a long lineup of 1,200cc and 883cc XL sports stars. Similarly, there are two versions of RH Sportsters, the Sportster S replaces 1,252cc (105 x 72mm) and the Nightster replaces 975cc (97 x 66mm). Compared to the Sportster S, the Nightstar RevMax not only has smaller bores and shorter strokes, but also uses one spark plug per cylinder instead of two, with variable valve timing for both intake and intake. Not used only on intake cams. Exhaust cam. The output claimed by the Nightstar is 90hp at 7,500rpm and 70lb-ft at 5,000rpm, while the Sportster S is 121hp and 94lb-ft.

The V angle between the Nightstar cylinders is 60 degrees, but the two crankshaft connecting rod journals are offset by 30 degrees. This gives Firing Order to RevMax and the pulse feels like a 90 degree V-twin. The engine has a roller finger valve actuation that reduces valve noise and a hydraulic lash adjuster that eliminates the need for valve adjustment. Variable valve timing moves the timing of the intake camshaft back and forth when the crankshaft rotation exceeds 40 degrees. This widens the power band, improves combustion efficiency and reduces emissions compared to fixed cam timing.

The single gauge includes an analog speedometer and a multifunction digital display. Exposed wires and bulbous switch pods spoil the lean and average look.

There is a 50mm downdraft throttle body between the cylinders and the fuel supply is optimized for each cylinder. Above the engine is a 6.5 liter airbox with a tuned speed stack that packs air into the combustion chamber for more power, inside the airbox to eliminate unwanted resonance and intake noise. There are ribs. RevMax’s dual counter balancer is tuned to reduce primary and secondary vibrations and locking couples, but to allow enough vibration to provide a built-in riding experience.

The Nightstar is equipped with Harley-Davidson’s Rider Safety Enhancement Electronics Suite, which includes ABS, traction control and drag torque slip control. ABS and TC are not lean angle adaptive because there is no IMU or lean angle sensor. There are three ride modes (Road, Sport, Rain) to adjust throttle response, engine braking, ABS and TC settings.

In a Nightstar press release, Harley-Davidson’s vice president of design, Brad Richards, declared that “form follows function and both report movement.” Motorcycles are intended to ride, and their design must serve that purpose. But everyone knows that compromises are made in the name of style. And when it comes to cruisers, many buyers are more interested in what they look like than how they go.

However, Nightstar balances the scale of curve appeal and riding appeal. The design team has put a lot of effort into achieving a classic sports star profile that combines a 19-inch front wheel with a 16-inch outback. The Nightstar Rider Triangle is built on a different platform, but is similar to other Sportster triangles, with a 27.8-inch low seat, mid-mount controls, and low-rise handlebars. (For those who prefer forward control, they are available as $ 599.95 accessories.) A great bonus is that both hand levers are adjustable for reach.

With 3 inch travel on Emulsion Technology Shock and 4.5 inch travel on 41mm Showa dual bending valve forks, Nightstar’s fully damped suspension provides a comfortable and responsive ride. Only the rear app load can be adjusted, with a spanner under the seat. It also has 32 degree cornering clearances on both sides, allowing considerable lean before chamfering the boot sole. Front and rear single disc brakes with Brembo calipers and steel braided lines provide ample stopping power.

The RevMax is a rev-happy engine, the red line is 9,500 rpm, and the 975cc version of Nightster feels vibrant and attractive. Giving it a whip through a fast set of curves feels right. How else would you justify such a responsive engine and rugged chassis? But Nightstar is still a cruiser and is as happy as running through the main streets at a cool pace.

The single 320mm front disc is paired with Brembo’s 4-piston calipers and comes standard with ABS. The cast wheels are fitted with Dunlop D401 tires.

Details, details

There are good reasons to love air-cooled engines. They are elemental, pure and elegant in their simplicity. The cooling fins look cool and there is no radiator and associated plumbing, so the engine bay is clean and tidy. The benefits of liquid-cooled engine performance and emissions are undeniable, but let’s face it. Many of them are not pleasing to the eye.

The surface and finish of RevMax makes it look muscular and sturdy, but it also looks like a robot. On the pipe side of the Nightstar, everything in the powertrain is in place, but the plastic shroud that covers the radiator and oil cooler looks like a retrofit. On the kickstand side, there were unsightly wires and hoses between the engine and radiator that could have been avoided even with the obsolete Street 750. Harley-Davidson is known for its attention to detail, and at Twin Cooling Milwaukee Eight, a great deal of effort was put into hiding evidence of liquid cooling. As with the RevMax engine, aesthetic appeal is the biggest challenge.

2022 Harley-Davidson Night Star
Nightstar is a true performance cruiser, combining powerful power, excellent handling and aggressive styling.

There’s also unattractive exposed wiring around the handlebars, and the switch pods next to both grips are bulbous with cheap buttons. Perhaps that’s because Harley-Davidson had previously set very high benchmarks for fit and finish, so these deviations stick out like his thumbs.

Otherwise, the Night Star will look sharp. Similar to the original XL1200N Nightstar, the only chrome on the fork stanchions allows for minimal bright work. The 7-spoke wheels are finished in satin black and the 2-in-1 exhaust is matte black. The black speed screen is stylish and functional, and the single round instrument gauge is handsome and user-friendly. All lights are LEDs and the rear turn signal doubles as a brake light.

2022 Harley-Davidson Night Star
There is a clear contrast between the clean and tidy pipe side of the Nightstar and the unfinished kickstand side. Sometimes called the “B” side for some reason.

Initially, Sportster established its reputation as a hot rod because it offered higher horsepower and lighter weight than most competitors. However, over the years, its reputation has diminished, and sports stars are no longer considered pioneers, but rather venerable members of old guards.

Thanks to the RevMax platform, Sportster S and Nightster have regained their performance reputation. The Sportster S is more powerful, more radical in style, with higher spec components and electronics, while the Nightster is more familiar, more accessible and has a strong connection to Sportsters’ long history. Both are taking Harley-Davidson in a bold new direction.
