Changes in Ontario regulations will increase access to net metering and allow PV customers to receive electricity bill credits for surplus energy sent back to the grid. This change will clarify and enable third-party ownership arrangements for net metering, such as leasing, financing, and power purchase agreements. Prior to the amendment, net metering regulations required customers to own or operate a renewable energy power generation system and qualify as a qualified generator.
Energy Minister Todd Smith said: “Families and businesses are leasing rooftop solar systems and benefiting from net metering, removing barriers such as customer upfront costs and supporting new jobs in the growing clean energy sector at the same time.”
Encouraging net metering creates new opportunities for renewable energy businesses such as installers, developers and service providers to provide distributed energy solutions such as rooftop solar and other distributed energy resources.
