How extreme is China’s lead in the container port business?

Not surprisingly, China dominates the ranking of container ports in the world, and with the surge in maritime trade, the port’s aggregates have reached a new peak.

Last week, Alphaliner released an annual ranking of the world’s top 30 container ports. Nine of the top ten are in Asia and seven are in China. Shanghai, Ningbo Zhoushan, Shenzhen, Guangzhou Nansha, Qingdao, Tianjin, Hong Kong.

The top 30 ports processed 450 million 20-foot worth of units in 2021, an increase of 6.5% year-on-year. In 2020, the first year of the pandemic, the growth rate was only 0.6%.

Asia’s megaports, which had beaten the competition long ago, accounted for 77% of last year’s top 30 total, processing almost half of 47% in China alone. Long-time champion Shanghai “continues to build leads,” “currently opening a gap of about 10 million TEUs with its closest competitor, Singapore,” said Alphaliner.

Far behind is European ports, processing 12% of the volume of the top 30 ports, 8% in the United States and 3% in the Middle East. The US leaderboard has three ports: 10 in Los Angeles / Long Beach, 18 in New York / New Jersey, and 28 in Savannah, Georgia.

Comparing the latest rankings with those 50 years ago shows how the world’s largest ports have maintained control over the long term.

Five years ago, Asia accounted for 78% of the top 30 ports and China accounted for 49%. This is about the same market share as last year, despite the trade war, blockades and port closures.

The top 30 ports processed 377.8 million TEU in 2016, equivalent to 19% growth between 2016 and 2021. This is a compound annual growth rate of 3.6%, which is comparable to the normal annual growth rate of global port throughput and is in line with what is expected in 2022 (Maersk predicts 2% -4%).

It was the unusually high growth of 2021 that brought the top 30 ports back to the normal trend line. Throughput increased by 6.5% last year, including all ports worldwide, according to Drewry. This is the same growth level that Alphaliner reported for the top 30 ports, which is 2% to 3% higher than normal.

Last year, some gateways worked better than others, with some of the world’s largest ports having particularly big winners. According to Alphaliner, Shanghai throughput surged 3.5 million TEU or 8%. Los Angeles / Long Beach 2.7 million TEU (16%); Ningbo Funshan 2.3 million TEU (8%); Shenzhen 2.2 million TEU (8%); Tianjin 1.9 million TEU (10%).
