New Team – WRC Driver Wins Debut in Dirt Fish
Jean-Pierre Nicolas, the winner of the fourth WRC rally in history, was a staple of Alpine’s early success when the WRC was first formed half a century ago.
However, the 1978 season was his most successful season as he won three rallies with two different teams, Porsche and Peugeot. And it’s thanks to the former that Nicholas won the spot on this list.
By this time, Nicholas was driving a variety of cars on a regular basis. For example, in the previous 1977 season, he entered from Opel, Peugeot, Ford and Renault. And at the beginning of the 1978 season, he joined Porsche’s attack for the Monte Carlo Rally.
Nicholas regularly challenged Monte’s honor student, but never completely finished his work. It all changed in 1978. Taking the lead early on the second day, Nicholas’ 911 Carrera RS was not overhauled thereafter, surpassing Jean Ragnotti’s Renault 5 Alpine for nearly two minutes.
In the future, Nicholas, who will become Peugeot’s sporting director during the WRC stint in the early 2000s and then ERC coordinator, will participate in another Porsche rally in his career, Monte the following year, but he Just finished. 6th.
