FIA confirms that Mashi may lose the role of F1 race director

Michael Masi may be replaced by F1 Race Director, but even if he remains, changes to the FIA’s trackside structure could be made this year, according to FIA’s Peter Bayer.

The FIA is currently conducting a detailed analysis late in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which has resulted in Mashi being criticized for the application of safety car regulations. This played a major role in Max Verstappen’s overtaking Lewis Hamilton to win the championship. Bayer was appointed as a single-seater director earlier this month, alongside the role of Secretary-General of Motorsport, and is deeply involved in the ongoing analysis. He acknowledges that Mashi’s role may change.

“Michael has done a great job in many ways,” Bayer said in Austria. Voralberger Nachrichten.. “We definitely don’t want to lose him. We told him that, but he said he could have a new race director.

“I can only propose to the World Peace Council, and they definitely include Michael.”

Bayer said he felt the need to ease the demands on the race director as Mashi is now required to play multiple roles within the FIA.

“There is a diverse task division of the race director, who is also a sporting director, safety and track delegate,” he said. “It was too much.”

But looking back at the Mercedes appeal that was finally withdrawn after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Bayer says that whatever happens, the outcome of the championship is unlikely to change.

“Mashi had several options in the few seconds he had to decide, all in accordance with the regulations. He could have finished the race under the safety car or could have stopped. (Red flag), but Nicholas Latifi’s accident couldn’t justify it, or he could have done what he did, which was somehow getting out of it. ..

“What would have happened if a Mercedes protest had been filed in the Court of Appeals after Steward’s refusal? I think the judge said the rules were different from what he had decided. Therefore, I could only declare the result invalid.

“But still-in case of cancellation-Max Verstappen would have been a world champion. It’s also about respecting the race director.”
