NABC Announces Axalta Best Paint Award Winners

The National Auto Body Council today announced the winners of Axalta’s Best Paint Award at the NABC Dedes of the Reason Virtual Car Show announced by the United Recyclers Group. The highest honor is given to Gary Unverzagt for the two-tone painting work at the Pontiac GTO in 1965.

“I love the overall look of this car’s color combinations, quality and color contrast,” said Keith Bell, director of North American distribution and industry relations at the award-winning Axalta Coating Systems. “There were a lot of incredible paint schemes and paint jobs. Congratulations on Gary’s creativity, attention to detail and beautiful achievements.”

Unverzagt purchased the entire partially disassembled vehicle. Complete frame-off restore. NABC says he is a retired firefighter who works on old cars and trucks as a hobby in the store every day and has little experience in repairing, but has mastered the skills in each project.

Unverzagt changes include:

• Rebuilt the motor with some changes to increase power.
• Rebuilt clutches, transmissions and rear ends, and added airride suspension and disc brakes.
• Added a digital dash and ready to paint the body, including the bumper. This was Unverzagt’s first vehicle repair.

The show was an innovative fundraising event that allowed car enthusiasts across the United States to show their passion and pride with NABC members, employees of the company, and car enthusiasts. Revenue supports the National Auto Body Council’s mission to change and save lives through initiatives such as the NABC Recycled Rides Program, the NABC First Responder Emergency Extrication (FREE) Program, and the NABC Drive Out Distraction Program.
