MG Vintage Racers: Celebrate 40 Years of History
MG Vintage Racers (MGVR) is North America’s oldest single-mark vintage race support group. A non-profit organization with resident volunteers, we have focused on both members and vintage racing MGs since our inception.
The December 2021 (Vol. 39 Iss. 11) issue of its wonderful monthly newsletter contains a detailed overview of this, and in the near future (and with the permission of the club Dave Nicholas), a new vintage race. There is a year. The whole story. -Ed.
Post-WWII sports car racing in North America actually began in 1948 on the streets of Watkins Glen, New York. From there it grew and spread. Over time, the race became more competitive as newer, more modified and faster cars were forced to graze old cars. In response, “vintage racing” began to take root in the 1960s as a flashback to the early and simpler era of sports car racing.
At this new venue, “the car was a star” and its vintage character will be preserved. Cars were generally limited to “original” mods, and it wasn’t important to win because this was a nostalgic race just for the fun of it.
The Vintage Sports Car Club of America (VSCCA) was established in 1959 and is said to have started the vintage car racing movement. However, in 1959, the MGA was still in production, so only older MGs were eligible to participate in VSCCA.
