Why many UAW members oppose GM, Ford, Stellantis deals

UAW members attend a rally in support of the labor union strike at the UAW Local 551 hall on the South Side on October 7, 2023 in Chicago, Illinois.  Jim Vondruska | Getty Images DETROIT – The United Auto Workers achieved record contracts with the Detroit automakers following contentious talks and roughly six weeks of targeted labor strikes. But not all of the union’s members are satisfied with the tentative agreements. The deals, which were recommended for ratification by UAW leaders, were on pace to pass as of Tuesday morning, but support is narrowing. The agreements have received notable rejections at major Ford Motor and, especially, General Motors plants in recent days. Workers at Chrysler-owner Stellantis are still in early voting but have so far largely backed the contract. At least three major assembly plants representing 9,730, or 21%, of GM’s 46,000 UAW-represented employees have voted against the pact. They include 61% against at Lansing Delta Township plant

2025 Ramcharger Claims “Unlimited” Electric Range

One of the extensive changes that RAM has made for the 2025 1500 is to introduce a new plug-in hybrid model called the RAM 1500 Ramcharger. The all-new 2025 RAM 1500 Ramcharger acts as a midpoint between the heavily updated 2025 RAM 1500 and the upcoming all-electric RAM 1500 REV. RAM thinks that the 1500 Ramcharger signifies the sweet spot for consumers who want a capable pickup truck, but also want better fuel economy without range anxiety, as RAM claims the truck has “unlimited battery-electric range.” The new 1500 Ramcharger features a 3.6-liter V6 engine, a 130-kW onboard generator, a 92-kWh battery pack, a 250-kW front electric drive module, and a 238-kW rear electric drive module. Combined output for the plug-in hybrid powertrain is rated at 663 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque. RAM claims the PHEV can get to 60 mph in roughly 4.4 seconds, is capable of towing up to 14,000 pounds, and has a payload capacity of up to 2,625 pounds. From a performance standpoint, the 1500

2024 Opel Grandland based on STLA Medium EV platform spied

Opel, a German brand within the Stellantis fold, has been spotted testing a prototype for its redesigned Grandland compact crossover. The prototype was for an electric version of the new Grandland, though other powertrains like a plug-in hybrid setup may be offered as an alternative. The new Grandland is being developed on Stellantis’ STLA Medium EV platform designed for compact and mid-size cars, and while it won’t be sold in the U.S. it may offer clues for future U.S.-bound vehicles based on the STLA Medium platform . Vehicles based on the STLA Medium platform come with front- or all-wheel-drive powertrains, the latter generated by having an electric motor at each axle. The platform made its debut earlier this year in the Peugeot 3008 compact crossover and has been designed to fit batteries with a usable capacity of up to 98 kwh, and offer power outputs up to 382 hp. It isn’t clear how much horsepower the Grandland will offer but at least one option matching or exceeding the 300

2025 Volvo EX30, Ram 1500 top this week’s new car reviews

Committed planners might be looking ahead to 2024 to save dates in the social calendar, but automakers always exceed even the most ambitious planners when it comes to the year ahead. We’re already covering the 2025 model year with seven weeks to go in 2023, with deliveries of those models expected for midway through 2024.  This forward planning, or time manipulation, dates back nearly a century, as a way to allow time to ramp up production of a new car and deliver it to dealers by the new calendar year. In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt codified the practice with one of many Great Depression-era executive orders to protect autoworkers from being idled before the holidays during a model year factory makeover.  Here’s a look forward to a few 2025s, some 2024s, and everything that moved us this week.  2025 Volvo EX30 review It’s a good, affordable electric hatchback with up to 275 miles of range, but its SUV credentials are thin, and those used to Volvo’s recent luxury vibe

Junkyard Gem: 1982 Dodge B250 Ram Wagon with 4-on-the-floor manual

There was a time, prior to the rise of the minivan , when Detroit pitched its full-sized passenger vans as very large and thirsty station wagons . At the same time, most of those vans came with manual transmissions and straight-six engines as base equipment (nearly all buyers after about 1970 paid extra for automatics and V8s, of course). Today’s Junkyard Gem , found in a San Francisco Bay Area car graveyard , is one of the rare 1980s American passenger vans built with six cylinders, three pedals and four forward gears… with floor-mounted shifter. Chrysler’s Dodge Division stopped building forward-control A100 vans in 1970, replacing the A100 with the much larger B-Series line of vans (Plymouth sold the B-Van, too, as the 1974-1983 Voyager ). Production with minor cosmetic changes continued through 1997, after which a major redesign kept the same basic chassis with a different appearance going until DaimlerChrysler axed the B-Series in favor of the Sprinter . From the 1971 thro

SAIC-GM, Tesla China team up on building interconnected charging network

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- SAIC-GM, the joint venture between SAIC Motor and General Motors, announced on November 10 via its WeChat account it has teamed up with Tesla China to establish an interconnected charging network. This strategic partnership aims to deliver a highly efficient and convenient charging experience. Starting from the latter part of 2023, owners of the Ultium platform-based models under SAIC-GM’s Cadillac and Buick brands, will gain access to brand-specific apps. Through the innovative charging map functionality, they will be able to charge their vehicles at some Tesla’s Supercharger stations and destination charging stations, previously accessible exclusively to Tesla vehicles. Photo credit: SAIC-GM As of today, Tesla has opened up 10 Supercharger stations and over 200 destination charging stations to non-Tesla electric vehicles in China. With Tesla progressively expanding the accessibility of its charging network, more of SAIC-GM’s pure electric vehicles will have t
